New Director Announced: Tom Smart to Join Beaverbrook Art Gallery in November

Fredericton, New Brunswick, October 19, 2017 – The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is pleased to announce that Thomas Smart will be its new Director and CEO. Smart will take the helm of the newly-expanded and revitalized Beaverbrook Art Gallery on November 27, 2017.

“We are excited to have Tom Smart returning to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery as Director and CEO,” said Allison D. McCain, Chair of the Gallery’s Board of Governors. “Tom has an international reputation and a wealth of experience. Under his leadership, we are confident the Beaverbrook Art Gallery will confirm its status as one of the premiere Canadian art galleries. We look forward to Tom bringing his passion for the visual arts to this dynamic institution, as we enter a new phase of the Gallery’s history.”

Smart is an experienced arts leader, lecturer, essayist, and author of award-winning art books. He brings nearly three decades of experience working in Canada and the United States.  This appointment is something of a homecoming: from 1989 to 1997, Smart launched his career as the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s Curator. Among other appointments, he has since served as chief curator and deputy director at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, director of the Frick in Pittsburgh USA, and CEO of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Most recently, he has been at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives in Brampton, ON.

“The Beaverbrook Art Gallery has always been a leader, a vibrant arts and educational powerhouse on the national and international stages.  With the completion of the outstanding new pavilion, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery is poised to take on an even greater leadership role.” says Smart. "I look forward to working with the Board and staff to engage new audiences, grow membership, friends, supporters, colleagues, and partners. Together, we’ll all ensure that the Beaverbrook Art Gallery is a proud and lively cultural arts destination for everyone in New Brunswick and across Canada and beyond.”

Smart takes over the leadership of the Gallery from Terry Graff (Director/CEO, 2013-2017) and Bernard Riordon (Director Emeritus and Interim Director and CEO). McCain thanked the two for their many years of dedication:

“On behalf of the Board of Governors, I want to thank both Terry and Bernie for their years of service to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery,” he said. “During their tenure we have run a successful $30.5 million capital campaign resulting in a spectacular expansion of Gallery space, substantially increased the endowment and acquired important new works for the permanent collection. Thanks to their leadership and efforts, the Beaverbrook is well positioned for the future.”
