Beaverbrook Art Gallery Showcases Dynamic and Growing Collection

Fredericton, NB, 22 September 2015An exhibition showcasing recent acquisitions to the Gallery’s collection opens this fall. Opening September 26, 2015 alongside Writing Topography, the 2015 Marion McCain Exhibition of Contemporary Atlantic Art, is an exhibition highlighting two new parts of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, playfully entitled Masterworks Now!  Celebrating New Acquisitions of Historical, Modern and Contemporary Art. On display are new acquisitions to the Gallery’s collection, as curated by the Gallery’s new senior curator, Jeffrey Spalding. The public is cordially invited to attend the opening reception at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Saturday, September 26 at 5 pm.

With a collection approaching four thousand works, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s holdings have grown and developed significantly over the past five-and-a-half decades since its foundation. While Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery celebrates many of the original acquisitions, Masterworks Now! highlights the changing and evolving nature of the Gallery’s collection. Masterworks Now! showcases over 50 works by over 25 artists among them contemporary works by Eric Fischl, John Hartman, IAIN BAXTER&, Holly King and historical works by B.C. Binning, York Wilson, William Ronald,  Armand Vaillancourt, Henry Sandham and M.A. Suzor-Cote.

“The variety and quality of this holding affords us opportunity to present countless variations and versions of our Masterworks presentation; each of us may have our own personal collection favorites,” says Jeffrey Spalding. “This fall we provide a quick first peek at a fraction of the hundreds of exciting new works that have recently been added to your collection. As we make preparations for the new-look expanded Beaverbrook Art Gallery building, we thought it made sense to give a bit of a preview of how the current donations and acquisitions activity is reinvigorating our collections.”

Beaverbrook Art Gallery Director/CEO and Chief Curator Terry Graff elaborates: “The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is first and foremost a collecting institution, a place where people can experience the very best of Atlantic, Canadian, and International art. Our senior curator, Jeffrey Spalding, has assembled a dynamic installation of recent acquisitions, most of which have been gifted to the Gallery since his recent appointment only months ago.  This is an outstanding accomplishment on his part, but also a demonstration of the generosity and support of collectors from across Canada for the revitalization and expansion of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Our visitors can look forward to many more presentations and educational experiences and opportunities related to the Gallery’s ever-evolving permanent collection.”

Masterworks Now! runs September 26, 2015 through November 1, 2015. The exhibition is organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery with the support of the Province of New Brunswick and the City of Fredericton. Admission is FREE for Beaverbrook Art Gallery members and for children age six and under. More information on memberships and benefits can be found on our website at
