What we see

What do you see in these two paintings?

How we feel

What words would you use to describe these two men? Happy? Sad? Playful? Tired? Serious?

What we think

Why do you think these particular colours were used by the artists? What kind of mood do these dark colours create?

How it was made

Both of these paintings are self-portraits. Why would the artist paint themselves like this? Draw a picture of yourself. What colours would you use?

About the artist

Bruno Bobak (b. 1923) was born in Poland and has lived in Fredericton since 1960. He was the Director of the Art Centre at the University of New Brunswick for 24 years. His brushstrokes are broad and directly influenced by German Expressionism. Bobak created this work when other Canadian artists were involved in abstractionism and non-figurative art.
