What
we see
Pretend a friend cannot see these paintings. Describe each
ship to them.
How we feel
What do you think it feels like to be on each ship?
What we think
Why did the artist choose these colours for his painting?
What different shapes do you see? How do you know the ship
in Savoie's painting is a ship… or is it a shape? If you
didn't know the title, what would you call this painting?
How it was made
He decides spontaneously what he will do with each artwork
and is guided by his emotions. He uses his whole body to
make brushstrokes and gestures. Try to compose an artwork
by doing three things: have in your mind one feeling, stand
up facing your artwork (tape it to the wall) and do not
bend your fingers or elbow – draw from your shoulder. What
do you notice that is different about your artwork?
About the artist
Roméo Savoie (b. 1928) was born
in Moncton and resides in Robichaud , New Brunswick. He
is admired as a model and mentor to upcoming Acadian artists
although his work does not reflect only Acadian subjects
or themes. He is also a published poet, a set designer,
and performance artist. Savoie's work is abstract and shows
his fascination with line, color, texture, and materials.
