What we see

What type of landscapes are depicted in these images?

How we feel

Focus on each painting. How do you feel? Peaceful or busy? Relaxed or stressed? Bored or excited? Where would you rather be?

What we think

What are some of the activities happening in each scene?

How it was made

Artists sometimes work in studios and paint images from their memories. Sometimes they paint from photographs. And sometimes they paint outside which is called “en plein air.” Where do you think these artists were standing when they painted these works?

About the artist

Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887 – 1976) spent his life painting working class people in England although he did not grow up in poverty. After working all day as a rent collector he studied art at evening classes where began to paint people like “matchstick figures” which became his trademark. Lowry spent much of his working life walking the poorest streets of Manchester and its surrounding area. By the 1950s the Royal Academy had invited him to join and his fame and success were assured. He said of himself 'Had I not been lonely, none of my work would have happened.'
