What we see
Look closely at these artworks. How many different things can you see happening in these two paintings?
How we feel
Animals were very important to people before they had machinery. What would it be like to have your animal sick when you had to plough a field for your crops? Do you have an animal in your life that means a lot to you? Does it have to work for you?
What we think
Both of these paintings show animals hard at work. How does the artist tell us that?
How it was made
It is difficult to make a painting of an animal because they never stay still for very long! How do you think the artists were able to paint these animals hard at work?
About the artist
Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872) was born in Amsterdam and educated in Dusseldorf. In 1835 he immigrated to New York where he met and married a French Canadian woman. They decided to return to Canada and live in Quebec City. This was where he found his ideal subjects and recorded the lively sights and scenes of French Canada.
